Safety & Gear (SAG) Support Needed for 2 Bicycle Events

posted May 15, 2018, 10:14 AM by Cathi Cogle

For several years, a few dedicated ham operators have been providing SAG support for West Bicycles' annual charity rides. We're hoping to expand the number of volunteers for these events. For those of you who have never provided this support, it's much more exciting than hanging around a water stop and reporting bib numbers!

As a SAG, we follow bike riders to help with radio comms, pickup and transport to rest stop or bike shop for rider fatigue or mechanical failure, and generally provide moral support.

As a SAG, you'll need to have room to carry up to two (2) bikes (and their riders) and, ideally, a mobile radio or HT with mag mount antenna. Most of us have bike racks on our car, truck, or van - and some just have room inside their van or truck for bikes and riders. I have a bike rack to loan if you would like to help, but don't have a bike rack. (It fits into trailer hitch receiver.)

We're looking for help for two upcoming rides:

Saturday, June 2 - Tour de Diabetes
  • Setup and comms check by 8:30am; expected finish by 2:00pm
  • Need 2 NCS and at least five (5) SAG vehicles (more is better)
    • 2 SAGs for 60-mile ride; 2 SAGS for 38-mile ride; 1 SAG in reserve
  • The bike shop usually provides gas cards as thank you for SAG drivers
Saturday, August 11 - Ride for the Rescue
  • Setup and comms check by 7:30am; expected finish by 2:00pm
  • Need 2 NCS and at least five (5) SAG vehicles (more is better)
    • 2 SAGS for 70-mile ride; 2 SAGS for 50-mile ride; 1 SAG in reserve
  • The bike shop usually provides gas cards as thank you for SAG drivers
Both of these events qualify as Public Service for those of you keeping your ARES participation up-to-date.

If you can help, please let me know so we can get all the materials (maps, turn-by-turn directions, etc.) to you ahead of time. For newbies, please let me know of your interest and I'll be happy to spend some one-on-one time with you. You can call or email me at k4blb@arrl.net.

Thanks for your support ... it's noticed and appreciated!
